NYSEG Stadium

It appears Double-A Binghamton is getting a top-to-bottom renovation. First, it was re-naming the team the Rumble Ponies to be more reflective of the Tri-City area in which the team plays.

Now, the Rumble Ponies home, NYSEG Stadium, will be undergoing a $2.5 million renovation project funded mostly through $2 million in grant funds from the State and Municipal Facilities Program of the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York (DASNY).  Binghamton Mayor Richard C. David said of the project:

Our City, our entire community, reflects on the memories of this ballpark while writing a new chapter of Binghamton baseball history.  Our project represents the most significant commitment to fans and this franchise since the stadium’s construction more than 25 years ago. Sen. Akshar has again delivered, bringing significant state resources to this City-owned facility. John Hughes and his staff, as well as the New York Mets organization, deserve high praise for their vision to improve NYSEG stadium and their dedication to this community.

The improvements referenced by Mayor David include the following:

  1. Reflective and energy efficient lighting for all 180 stadium lamps and concourses;
  2. Updated bullpens and batting cages;
  3. Open-air right field entrance;
  4. New kiosks, signage, and fencing;
  5. Playground area;
  6. Performance stage for live music;
  7. 144 person picnic deck;
  8. New handicap lift;
  9. New BBQ stand; and
  10. Improved groundskeeping, clubhouse, office, and skybox facilities.

Rumble Ponies owner, John Hughes, is grateful for the investment made by DASNY, and he believes the improvements will help the Mets and Rumble Ponies to maintain their current affiliation for years to come:

It’s an amazing honor to have this kind of community support as we grow NYSEG Stadium into a regional sports and entertainment destination.  Because of support from Mayor David, Sen. Akshar and Leader Flanagan, we are building an environment for fans to enjoy the best experience Minor League Baseball has to offer. Our investments in player development facilities will ensure the New York Mets have a stadium built to host their Double-A franchise for decades to come. This is the latest step on our journey to bring fun and excitement to the Rumble Ponies franchise. I look forward to seeing everyone next season in Rumble Town.

Naturally, the Mets organization was thrilled by the improvements as well with Mets COO Jeff Wilpon adding, “We are thrilled with the modernization of the Binghamton facility that will benefit fans, players and keep the team as part of the community for many years.”
