Sand Gnats Split Double-Header With Greenville Drive

The Savannah Sand Gnats and the Greenville Drive played a double header on Friday at Grayson Stadium. The teams split with Savannah winning the first game 11-3 and Greenville winning the second game 4-1.

Savannah is in first place in the Southern Division and remains 6.5 games ahead of second place Greenville in the standings.

In the opener, Savannah starter, Miller Diaz, won his 4th game tossing five shutout innings, and allowed just one hit, walked four, struck out eight and lowered his ERA to 1.74.  Savannah had 11 hits and scored at least one run in their first five innings.

Savannah third baseman, Jeff McNeil, had three singles and scored three runs. Left fielder Stefan Sabol drove in three runs and now has 30 RBI’s, which is among the league leaders. Dominic Smith, who was batting at the DH spot, went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs.

Greenville scored two runs in the 6th and one run in the 7th off Sand Gnat reliver, Paul Paez, who pitched two innings, and allowed four hits, three runs, walked two, and struck out one.

In the second game, Savannah took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when DH Gavin Cecchini tripled and scored on a double by L.J. Mazzilli.

Greenville scored two runs in the 4th inning and two runs in the 5th inning, all off Savannah starter, John Gant,who went five innings, and allowed four runs on seven hits, walked two and struck out seven. Taking the loss, Gant is now 4-2. It was another solid relief appearance for Gnats Akeel Morris, pitched the final two innings, without allowing a hit or a run, but walked one and struck out two.

The announced attendance was 3,097.

The Sand Gnats play the Charleston RiverDogs on Saturday at Grayson Stadium, with first pitch at 6:05 PM.
