Adam Rubin of ESPN NY reports that pitching prospect Robert Whalen has been hospitalized with an infection on his right, throwing hand.

Rubin adds that the infection is not MRSA and not believed to be overly serious. Still, Whalen is expected to need a minor invasive procedure to clean out the infection, which is above the knuckle on one of the fingers.

Whalen, 20, is 4-0 with a 1.80 ERA in four appearances (three starts) at low-A Savannah. He was placed on the South Atlantic League team’s disabled list.
