Savannah Starter Kevin McGowan Shuts Down Delmarva Enroute to First Victory

Game one of the three game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Delmarva Shorebirds was played in front of 1,361 fans Tuesday evening at Grayson Stadium.

Delmarva out hit Savannah 6-3, but Savannah won the game 4-0.

Sand Gnats starter, Kevin McGowan, was brilliant, shutting out the Shorebirds for 6 2/3 innings, allowed only three hits and striking out seven, improving his record to 1-1 with the win.

In the first inning, the Gnats scored their first run without a hit.  First Gavin Cecchini and Jeff McNeil walk and then a ground out off the bat of L.J. Mazzilli, moved both runners over to second and third. Next batter, Jared King is hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Shorebirds starter Hunter Harvey serves up a his fourth walk of the inning, this time to Stefan Sabol, which forces in a run and the Gnats go up 1-0.

Savannah rallied to score three  more runs in their half of the  6th inning, when L. J. Mazzilli, led off the inning with a single and scored on a triple by Jared King, who also scored on a wild pitch. Then a sacrifice fly by Colton Plaia scored the third and final run for the Gnats.

Game two of the series starts  Wednesday at 7:05, at Grayson Stadium.
