The final game of the four game series between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Rome Braves was played in front of 1,525 fans Sunday afternoon at Grayson Stadium.

With the game tied at 3-3, Savannah scored a run in the 8th inning and stopped Rome’s rally in the 9th inning, to win 4-3 and win three out of four game series.

The Braves scored their first run in the 2nd inning when third baseman Carlos Franco singled and was out at second when right fielder Connor Lien hit into a fielders choice. A double by left fielder Blake Brown, would score Lien.

Savannah tied the game in their half of the 2nd inning when hot hitting L.J. Mazzilli, slammed his 6th home run on the season over the left field fence.

In the third inning, with the bases loaded, third baseman Jeff McNeil had a two-run single, to give the Sand Gnats a 3-1 lead.

Rome scored a run in the 6th inning when shortstop Johan Camargo tripled and scored on second baseman Ross Wilson, singled.

Braves’ Franco led off the 7th with a triple and scored on a ground out, to tie the game at 3-3

Savannah took the lead in the 8th inning, when catcher Colton Plaia doubled, and a sac bunt by left fielder Patrick Bondi advanced Cruzado (pinch ran for Plaia) to third. An RBI single by McNeil turned out to be the deciding run.

Rome rallied with two hits in the 9th inning, but could not score.

Sand Gnats had seven hits for the game, McNeil going  3-for-4 with 3 RBI’s and Mazzilli went 3-for-4 with one RBI.

The Sand Gnats start a three game series with the second-place Asheville Tourists, with the first game starting at 7:05pm Monday at Grayson Stadium.
