Here is the recap of Tuesday’s Savannah doubleheader from our Sand Gnats beat writer, Wally Murphy.

SAVANNAH 6, AUGUSTA 5

The first game of the double header between the Savannah Sand Gnats and the Augusta GreenJackets was played Tuesday at Grayson Stadium, with Savannah out hitting Augusta 9-4 and winning an exciting game, 6-5.

The GreenJackets scored three runs in the third inning and the Sand Gnats answered with two runs in their half of the third, when DH Jared King batting with the bases loaded, singled home center fielder Patrick Biondi and shortstop Gavin Cecchini, who each singled earlier in the inning.

In the 5th inning, both teams would score two runs apiece keeping Augusta in the lead 5-4. Savannah tied the score in the 6th inning, when Sand Gnats left fielder Stephan Sabol hit his first home run of 2014, over the left field fence and knot the game at 5-5. Sabol would finish the game 3-for-3.

With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 7th inning, second baseman L.J. Mazzilli walked to give Savannah a 6-5 victory.

SAVANNAH 3, AUGUSTA 1

Game two of the double header fans saw Sand Gnats pitchers dominate allowing only one run on three hits, and win the game 3-1.

The Sand Gnats scored two runs in the 1st inning with back to back singles by Victor Cruzado and Jared King and then both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch. A double by L.J. Mazzilli then scored two runs.

In the 4th inning, the Sand Gnats scored their third run of the game. The GreenJackets scored their lone run in the 6th inning when center fielder Randy Ortiz walked and went to second on a wild pitch. He then advanced to third on a ground out and scored on another ground out.
