Salt Lake 7, Las Vegas 5

Baseballs were flying all over this one like it was a pinball machine with 19 combined hits – and five of them left the yard. The end result left Vegas saddled with a 7-5 loss after Chris Schwinden struggled over his first five innings…again.

Schwinden’s ERA now stands at 6.24 after he allowed six earned runs off eight hits and two walks over the aforementioned five innings – and he was taken deep twice, by Brad Hawpe and Matt Long. Outside of Schwinden, David Aarsdma was taken deep in the top of the ninth for a solo home run for the only other Salt Lake run. Gonzalez Germen and Sean Henn pitched scoreless innings in between.

Las Vegas did score five runs off the strength of two solo home runs from Collin Cowgill and Kirk Nieuwenhuis. Kirk and Cowgill went back-to-back in the fourth. Vegas struck first in this game with two runs in the first, off a Wilmer Flores grounder and a Zach Lutz Sac fly.

D.J. Mitchell is scheduled to start tomorrow.
