The Seattle Mariners have announced they have claimed INF Sam Haggerty off of waivers from the New York Mets. It should be noted this conflicts with earlier reports the Mets had released Haggerty.

Haggerty, 25, was obtained by the Mets from the Cleveland Indians along with RHP Walker Lockett in exchange for C Kevin Plawecki. He would begin the season with Double-A Binghamton, and he was added to the 40 man roster and called up to the Majors to serve as a pinch runner for the Mets.

Haggerty was designated for assignment by the Mets when the team officially signed RHP Dellin Betances.

In his only season in the Mets minor league system, he hit .271/.376/.387 with 15 doubles, six triples, three homers, and 26 RBI, and he was successful in 26 of 30 stolen base attempts. He was named an Eastern League All-Star, and he was rated by Baseball America as the best base runner and defensive second baseman in the league.
