The Mets called up several players from their minor league camp over the past several weeks, so they could participate in split squad games and a few of them made their big league camp debuts. These players included, Travis Taijeron, Brian Burgamy, Dilson Herrera, Dominic Smith, T.J. Rivera, Greg Peavey, and Kyle Johnson.

I thought it was really a cool idea that the Mets would give some of their highly touted prospects an opportunity to not only hang out with some of the big league players, but also participate in the actual games.

Outfield prospect, Travis Taijeron, 25, who was signed by the Mets in 2011, made his big league camp debut on March 5th, and recorded his first spring hit on Sunday, when he went 2 for 2, with a double. In 2013, the outfield prospect played with St. Lucie (A+) and Binghamton (AA) and combined he batted, .271/.356/.531, with 23 home runs and 69 RBI, in 420 at bats.

Utility prospect, Brian Burgamy, 32, was signed by the Mets back in February, and made his Mets spring debut on March 14th and so far he is 2 for 6, with a walk and a stolen base. In 2013, he played with four different clubs in the independent and mexican league and combined he batted .322/.425/.528, with 32 home runs and 101 RBI, in 454 at bats.

Second base prospect, Dilson Herrera, 20, is #11 on the Mets top prospect watch list, and who came to the organization in the trade that sent Marlon Byrd and John Buck to the Pirates last August, made his big league spring debut on March 15th. In the game, he replaced Daniel Murphy at second base and played three innings on the field, but did not record an at bat.  He did start a double play when he fielded a ground ball, and threw to shortstop Matt Reynolds, who then threw on to first baseman Dominic Smith to end the inning. In 2013, the slick fielding second baseman, combined his time between the Pirates organization and the Mets and batted .237/.334/.416, with 27 doubles, 11 home runs and 60 RBI, in 442 at bats.

First base prospect, Dominic Smith, 18, who was the Mets 2013 first round draft pick, and also ranked #4 on the Mets top prospect watch list, made his big league camp spring debut on March 15th, and recorded his first hit. In 2013, between the Gulf Coast Mets (R) and Kingsport (R), he batted a combined, .301/.398/.439, with three home runs and 26 RBI, in 173 at bats.

Infield prospect, T.J. Rivera, 25, who started his Mets career in 2011, made his big league spring debut on Sunday when he replaced Josh Satin at third base, and in his only plate appearance he walked. In 2013, he played with St. Lucie (A+) and batted .289/.348/.351, with two home runs and 51 RBI, in 502 at bats.  He also led the Florida State League with 145 hits.

Right handed pitcher, Greg Peavey, 25, who signed with the Mets in 2010, made his spring debut on Sunday and tossed one inning and allowed just one hit. In 2013, he pitched with Binghamton (AA) and Las Vegas (AAA) and combined he was 6-5, with a 4.80 ERA, and 65 strikeouts in 95.2 innings of relief.

Outfield prospect, Kyle Johnson, 24, who came over to the Mets in a trade that sent Collin Cowgill to the Angels last June, made his big league spring debut on Sunday and in two at bats he was hitless with a run scored. In 2013, between the Angels organization and the Mets he batted, .289/.385/.381, with five home runs, 47 RBI and  44 stolen bases in 461 at bats.

I look forward to watching some other prospects given the opportunity to play alongside major league ready players and learn from the best.
