In addition to parting with J.D. Davis, the New York Mets included three promising pitching prospects to obtain Darin Ruf from the San Francisco Giants. The trio is Thomas Szapucki, Carson Seymour, and Nick Zwack.

Szapucki, 26, was once a highly regarded Mets prospect, but his stock has taken a hit due to injuries. His calling card is his fastball/curveball combination with he uses to rack to the strikeouts.

He struggled in his two Major League appearances. With Triple-A Syracuse this season, he was 2-6 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.297 WHIP, 4.1 BB/9, and a 12.2 K/9.

Seymour, 23, was the Mets sixth round draft pick out of Kansas State University last year.He has a mid-90s fastball which tops off at 99 MPH, and he combines that with a strong curvy slider.

Between St. Lucie and Brooklyn, he is 5-5 with a 2.76 ERA, 1.090 WHIP, 2.3 BB/9, and a 10.1 K/9.

The final pitcher, Zwack, 24, was the Mets 17th round draft pick out of Xavier University in last year’s draft. While he was not on any top 30 prospect rankings to begin the year, he was definitively going to be on them on the strength of this season.

Zwack had been the breakout pitcher of the Mets system this year. He features a low 90s fastball, low 80s slider, and a change. With his ability to generate spin on these pitches, he gets a lot of swings-and-misses.

Between St. Lucie and Brooklyn, he’s made 15 starts and three relief appearances. He’s 6-2 with a 2.36 ERA, 0.996 WHIP, 2.1 BB/9, and an 11.3 K/9.

Overall, this trade is a hit to the pitching depth of the organization, and it was a high price to pay. That said, if Ruf delivers and the Mets win it all, many will believe this steep price was well worth it.
