On Wednesday, September 9th, the Dominican Winter League held their annual draft, where the 6 teams in the league drafted the top eligible DWL rookies that played in Full Season Ball. Among the first round, was Mets top shortstop prospect Amed Rosario, who was selected 5th overall by the Aguilas Cibaenas, or in English, the Eagles of Cibao.
Rosario, who was aggressively assigned to High-A St. Lucie, a notorious pitcher’s league, held his own as the youngest player in the Florida State League. He maintained an average around .260 and kept pace in the top 5 in doubles until he started having lingering wrist problems, that hampered his ability to play from July to the end of the year. He finished the year hitting .257 with 25 extra base hits (20 doubles, 5 triples). At the end of the season, he was given a promotion to Double-A Binghamton where he will play next year.
In addition to Amed Rosario, there were other Mets prospects drafted:
Leones Del Escogido (Santo Domingo)
RHP Martires Arias
UTL Jean Rodriguez
Gigantes Del Cibao
3B Jhoan Urena
RHP Marcos Molina
Aguilas Cibaenas
SS Amed Rosario
OF John Mora
RHP Scarlyn Reyes
C Adrian Abreu
Notes-
- Licey, the Estrellas, and the Toros do not have any Mets Players as of yet.
- While these players are drafted, there will likely be more additions to each playing roster with other Mets players who are free agents in the Dominican Winter League.
- The Dominican Winter League starts October 15th, and ends on December 21st.
- The Aguilas, Licey, Estrellas, and Escogido all stream home games through their websites.
