The Mets have traded starting pitcher Steven Matz to the Toronto Blue Jays for prospects Sean Reid-Foley, Yennsy Diaz and Josh Winckowski. Our very own Michael Mayer of Metsmerized and Mets Minors was the first to report that a deal was happening.
Diaz, a 24-year-old right-handed pitcher out of the Dominican Republic, was the Blue Jays’ No. 26 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He has posted a 3.74 ERA and 8.0 K/9 in five minor league seasons, and had a brief cup of coffee in the majors in 2019, pitching in just one game. He has yet to pitch at the Triple-A level, though.
Winckowski, 22, also a right-handed pitcher, was right behind Diaz at No. 27. He hasn’t pitched above High-A, but has posted a 3.35 ERA, 8.1 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in four seasons.
Both pitchers have been primarily starters, but could be pushed back to the bullpen if needed.
Reid-Foley, 25, is another right-handed pitcher, though not as highly touted as the other two. He owns a 4.29 minor league ERA along with 10.1 K/9 and 4.4 BB/9, and has also pitched in 21 games as a big leaguer (13 starts), posting a 4.40 ERA, 9.5 K/9 and 6.0 BB/9. He gets a lot of strikeouts, but the walk rates there are obviously a little worrisome.
For someone whose stock wasn’t exactly at its peak, the Mets got a pretty good haul for Matz. To even get anything for him could be considered a plus, depending on how confident one was in his ability to bounce back. While losing Matz might hurt a little in the short term, considering he was one of their few major league depth options in the rotation, it provides them with more depth in the long term.
