Mets prospect Sam McWilliams, closed out a 2-0 win on Tuesday afternoon at Clover Park. The 25-year-old is listed at 6’7” and it definitely showed on the mound, as he hit 97 MPH with his fastball multiple times and mixed in his slider as well.

Manager Luis Rojas told the media after the game that he liked seeing how McWilliams was able to get out of trouble in the seventh inning.

McWilliams struck out Grae Kessinger and Alex De Goti in his inning of work, throwing 23 pitches (11 being strikes). He started his career with the Kansas City Royals and was most recently with the Tampa Bay Rays. McWilliams was assigned to the minor leagues on November 2 but elected to become a free agent and the Mets pounced on him a couple of weeks later. Some compare McWilliams with Noah Syndergaard, as they’re both big right-handers with blond hair and electric stuff.

Mark Vientos, 21, came in for starting first baseman Pete Alonso in the top of the fifth and singled in his only at-bat. Vientos had never played first base prior to Tuesday, as he’s a third baseman, but the Mets organization is trying to make a real effort to increase his versatility around the diamond.

Brett Baty, who is also a third baseman, saw his first action of spring and struck out in the seventh before center field prospect Pete Crow-Armstrong was called out on strikes.

Following James McCann‘s successful day in Port St. Lucie which included throwing out a runner, he said he likes what he’s seeing from his potential replacement down the road.

“I think he has a really bright future,” McCann said, referring to New York’s top catching prospect Francisco Alvarez.

The Mets play the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday at 1:05 p.m. ET with Jerad Eickhoff expected to be on the mound.
