Spring training games are about a week in, with multiple of the Mets’ top prospects getting acting, including Jett Williams, Drew Gilbert, and Luisangel Acuña. Two of their top pitching prospects will be in action this weekend when Christian Scott and Mike Vasil take the mound on Saturday against the Marlins in Jupiter. Scott and Vasil will both be making their first appearance of the spring.

Scott, 24, posted a 2.57 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, and struck out 107 batters in 87 2/3 innings last year between Low-A St. Lucie, High-A Brooklyn, and Double-A Binghamton. He was named the Mets Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Scott was listed in the Top 100 MLB prospects list by FanGraphs, ESPN, and Baseball Prospectus. He should start the season in Triple-A Syracuse and make his major league debut during the 2024 season.

Vasil, 23, posted a 4.65 ERA (3.71 in Double-A and 5.30 ERA in Triple), 1.22 WHIP, and struck out 138 batters in 124 innings last year with Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse. I made sure to note the ERAs at each stop because pitching in the Triple-A International League last year was like pitching on the moon. The league average ERA for the season was a whopping 5.18 and the Syracuse Mets as a team had a 5.84 ERA.

Mets Add Pitching Depth

Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports the Mets have signed right-handed pitcher Jon Duplantier to a minor league deal. The deal does not include an invitation to big league camp.

Duplantier, 29, hasn’t pitched in the major leagues since 2021, when he posted a 13.15 ERA in four starts with the Arizona Diamondbacks. His only other big league experience came in 2019 with the Diamondbacks, and he posted a 4.42 ERA in 15 appearances (3 starts) during that stint.

The former Top 100 prospect made only three starts last season in the minor leagues. He pitched to an 8.38 ERA in 9 2/3 innings with the Phillies High-A affiliate.
