Our own Jacob Resnick arrived in Port St. Lucie today and was able to check out some of the Mets early morning workouts. One interesting thing he observed was the David Thompson working with the major leaguers at first base during the pitchers fielding practice. The Mets drafted David in the 4th round of the 2015 draft from the Miami Hurricanes.
The former high school quarterback played third base in college but his arm strength has become an issue since tearing his labrum and having a rib removed because of his Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. When he was drafted there were already questions about whether he would have to move from the hot corner to first base or left field.
The plus tool for Thompson always has been and still is his power, he lead the Nation with 19 homeruns his senior season for Miami and set the Florida high school homerun records for season (19) and career (55).
Thompson underwhelmed offensively hitting .218/.274/.320 with three home runs in 59 games in his first season in pro ball for the Brooklyn Cyclones. He should start the season with the Columbia Fireflies and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him split time between first and third base.
Earlier this offseason Teddy tabbed Thompson as a breakout candidate for the 2016 season.
Exactly where he needs to be.
Same thing I was thinking, will be interesting what the Mets do. Have to think he at least sees some time at 1B.
A part of that Columbia IF…
Not too concerned about his poor season last year, only part of a short season league and he was coming off a major shoulder injury, that’s a hard one…this is the year I’m concerned with
