Sproat Bounces Back With Seven Shutout Innings

It was a bounce-back outing for top prospect Brandon Sproat, who fired seven scoreless innings with nine strikeouts while allowing just five baserunners. With the Mets’ rotation struggling and rosters set to expand tomorrow, Sproat could be the next man up.

Francisco Alvarez also appeared in another rehab game with Triple-A Syracuse. He went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts as their starting designated hitter.

Triple-A

Hernández and Clifford drove in the only two runs for Syracuse, with Hernández supplying the big swing on a solo homer. Jett Williams was scratched late after being penciled in at second base, and Carson Benge also sat out.

Sproat was dominant against Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, generating 14 whiffs on 91 pitches. He landed 58 for strikes and hit 99 mph on the radar gun.

Walks proved costly for Yankees No. 4 prospect Carlos LaGrange (per Baseball America), who issued six free passes. Ewing and Lugo each walked thrice, while Smith singled three times to help fuel the offense. Smith also contributed with an absolute web gem!

De La Cruz allowed back-to-back extra-base hits in the first but struck out five. Cornielly, Ben Simon, TJ Shook, and Lambert combined for 6 1/3 scoreless innings. Lambert’s save extended his scoreless streak to five outings and lowered his August ERA to 0.93.

High-A

Box Score

Vargas and Henriquez each ripped triples into the right-center gap. Henriquez also drew two walks in a strong High-A debut, while Houck reached base twice on walks and has looked more comfortable at the plate in August (.773 OPS) after a rough July (.415 OPS).

Banks finished the night with two innings and five strikeouts, giving up only a solo homer to Yankees prospect Dillon Lewis.

Low-A

Lakeland Flying Tigers (71-50) 7, St. Lucie Mets (74-50) 2

Box Score

Jimenez lined an opposite-field RBI single, while Guzman hammered a double 102.8 mph off the bat. St. Lucie finished just 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position despite racking up eight hits.

After Nicolas Carreno allowed four runs (one earned) in two innings, the 18-year-old Lara surrendered two more in relief. Alvarez and Mijares steadied things with 3 2/3 scoreless frames, with Mijares impressing in his Low-A debut by striking out four on 25 pitches.
