It was warm, sunny, and windy in Port Saint Lucie on Friday night as the St. Lucie Mets found themselves in a slugfest loss to the Florida Fire Frogs in their return home to First Data Field for a six-game stretch. The teams combined for 17 runs and 22 hits, but perhaps surprisingly only one home run on the night (Fire Frogs Langhorne off Mets starter Kyle Wilson in the third inning) as the Mets ultimately fell 10-7.

The loss snapped the Mets five-game winning streak.

It was a rough night for Mets starter Kyle Wilson. The 22-year-old right hander drafted in the 35th round of the 2017 draft would not make it out of the fourth inning on the evening. Three straight run-scoring hits, including a two-run double by opposing shortstop Riley Unroe, spotted the Fire Frogs an early 4-0 lead in the second inning. Second baseman Brett Langhorne then later clubbed a massive three-run home run in the following inning to make 7-0.

It appeared that Wilson was having trouble with his command from the start. Wilson was up on his fastball throughout the night and his breaking pitch was shown to be left hanging too much over the plate during his outing. Stadium radar had Wilson sitting 90-91 MPH and topping 92 MPH on his fastball. After seeing his off speed pitches in the 80-84 MPH range Wilson made efforts to slow it down dropping his breaking ball into the upper 70s but simply could not maintain good command or hit the corners.

He finished his night lasting only 3 1/3 innings allowing 9 hits, 7 earned runs, 3 walks and this one strikeout shown below.

The Mets went on to score the next three runs led by second baseman Manny Rodriguez. In the fifth inning, Rodriguez crushed a RBI triple and scored on the play when Langhorne committed a throwing error to cut the lead to 7-3.

The Fire Frogs would then get two runs back in the top of the sixth off reliever Yeizo Campos. Campos entered game in the fourth replacing Wilson and proceeded to strike out the first six batters he faced over his first two innings of work.

However, in the sixth inning after starting off with a strikeout Campos allowed four straight hits including two run scoring singles to make it 9-3. Campos would later record his seventh strikeout and induce a flyout to end his day overall going 2 2/3 innings, 4 hits, 2 ER, 0 walks and seven strikeouts.

Campos continues to be a pitcher who consistently throws strikes, with 37 of his recorded 51 pitches on the night going for strikes.  Stadium radar had Campos sitting 91-92 MPH on his fastball with his breaking pitches ranging from 78-84 with a nice mix in speeds.

The Mets attempted a comeback in the home half of the sixth scoring four times to cut the lead to 9-7. Luis Carpio had the big hit of the inning, a two-run double shown in the video below.

However, the Mets bats would then go cold and be retired 10 straight times between the sixth and ninth innings before a late Blake Tiberi double. It was not enough as the Fire Frogs, who added a tenth run in the eighth, would prevail.

Todd Frazier (oblique) continued his rehab assignment. He played all nine innings, including the first five at shortstop. He turned a nice double play in the first inning in his only chance. At the plate Frazier went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.

Tiberi extended his hitting streak to six games with a 2-for-5 effort. His late inning double made it five straight contests with a multi-hit game.

Catcher Nick Meyer reached base three times, scored twice, drove in a run and also threw out an attempted base stealer.

Outfielder Hansel Moreno showed off a strong accurate arm throwing out a runner at the plate attempting to tag on a fly ball to right field, video shown below.

Center fielder Desmond Lindsay extended his hitting streak to four-games with a lined double in the sixth. Lindsay also continues to make outstanding plays in the outfield as hes done all year to this point.

Full box score

The Mets (5-4) and Fire Frogs (5-4) play the middle game of their series back at First Data Field on Saturday night.
