The big surprise here is that the Mets will be sending top position player prospect Amed Rosario back to St. Lucie, at least to start the season. They have said they want to protect him from the cold weather of Binghamton in April. The roster currently has 28 players on it and will have to be trimmed down before Thursday.
Catchers (2):
Tomas Nido – Finally got semi-regular playing time in 2015, with career highs in homeruns (6) and RBI (40).
Lednier Ricardo – Cuban that made his affiliated debut last season, hit .188/.195/.224 for St. Lucie.
Infielders (7):
Phillip Evans – An overslot bonus guy in the 15th rounder in 2011 who has not lived up to billing.
Kevin Taylor – Former 36th rounder of the Dodgers, has played last two seasons in Indy ball.
Luis Guillorme – Defensive whiz that earned the South Atlantic League MVP in 2015 after hitting .318/.391/.354 for the Savannah Sand Gnats.
Jhoan Urena – Top third base prospect coming off lost year due to injuries, he will start 2016 in the same place as last season.
Michael Katz – First baseman that hit eight homeruns last year.
Amed Rosario – The Mets top position prospect will begin in St. Lucie for the second consecutive season.
Jonathan Johnson – On base machine walked 76 times in 120 games last year.
Outfielders (4):
Patrick Biondi – Left-handed hitter that led Mets minors with 38 steals last year.
Champ Stuart – 80 grade speed but struck out 141 times in 97 games last season.
Wuilmer Becerra – Coming off a breakout year with .423 SLG in extreme pitchers park.
John Mora – Lefty hitter that had 22 doubles, 12 triples, and stole 14 bases in 2015.
Pitchers (15):
Michael Gibbons – Coming off solid pro debut over four different levels, hits 95 MPH.
Chris Flexen – Breakout candidate that seems to finally be healthy.
Josh Prevost – Tall righty (6’8″) that was Mets 5th rounder in 2014.
Corey Oswalt – Control specialist that walked less than a batter per game in 2015.
Casey Delgado – Pitched to 3.17 ERA for Savannah after signing out of Indy ball.
Alberto Baldonado – Lefty that struck out 74 in 56.2 innings last season.
Ben Griset – LOOGY that held lefty hitters to a .180 average last season for Savannah.
Kevin McGowan – 13th round pick in 2013 that can start or relieve.
Tim Peterson – Missed 80 games last year due to suspension for PED’s, 10.4 K/9 in career.
Scarlyn Reyes – Right-handed starter who throws in the mid-90’s and is 26 years old.
Jimmy Duff – Mets fan who has a low-90’s fastball and plus control.
Robert Coles – Ground ball pitcher that has allowed only two homeruns in 131 career innings.
Corey Taylor – Mets 7th round pick last season had 1.50 ERA in first 18 pro innings.
Ricky Knapp – Righty that excelled as a starter last year for Savannah then struggled out of the bullpen for St. Lucie.
Paul Paez – Left-handed reliever with career 2.98 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 108.2 innings.
The middle infield defense of Guillorme and Rosario alone will be worth the price of admission, question is how long will Amed stay in Port St. Lucie. The outfield field could be the strength of this team if Mora and Becerra repeat their 2015 offensive performances.
Don’t underestimate the starting with rotation with the emerging Flexen, great find in Gibbons, and Delgado who had a strong affiliated ball debut last year. Biggest surprise in the bullpen is righty Taylor who the Mets are being aggressive with after drafting him in the 7th round last year. Baldonado is an intriguing bullpen guy that showed the ability to get righties and lefties out in 2015.
St. Lucie will begin the 2016 season at home against the Jupiter Hammerheads tomorrow at 6:30 PM ET with Josh Prevost getting the start on the mound.
Now we have all four of the full season rosters, here is Binghamton, Columbia, and Las Vegas.
I really appreciate the blurb on every player. Good job.
Kevin, you linked to the wrong Josh Johnson. The one you did is 41 y.o.
Listed as John Johnson on bref
Actually only 27
Dang automatic linker does that every time with him.
Gibbons surprisingly is NOT part of the rotation.
Oops!
Thanks!
Surprised about Rosario. For some reason I thought he would be starting the year in AA
Can’t just be the weather. He never really dominated a level. I think it’s a good move to have him repeat High A for a little while. If the bat starts to show, give him a quick promotion.
Most thought he would after finishing 2015 in Bingo. I think they want to see him excel with the bat for a month or so before bringing him back to Binghamton. I’m not buying the weather reasoning.
I feel like he’s the kinda guy that won’t dominate till he matures a little bit. This could really help his development
Thanks. And at some point if he plays for the Mets, he’s gonna have to deal with weather.
That was my thinking as well which made me think they might want to see him have a great start to the season offensively. We all know about his potential but he has never had a great stretch with the bat. Maybe that is something the Mets are worried about. Worrying about the weather for a team that plays in cold weather doesn’t add up for me.
Yeah. That is the only reasoning which makes sense and is logically from a Mets standpoint. At some point, he’s going to have to show that he can produce and not be totally judged on potential
