Baseball America has published their Hot Sheet for the week ending July 18. As noted by Baseball America, this list reflects performance on the field, and it is not a reflection of their status among the Top 100 or internal team prospect rankings. With those caveats, there were two Mets who made the rankings: OF Stanley Consuegra and 3B Brett Baty.
Consuegra was ranked fifth by BA after his strong week where he was 11-for-25 with five runs, two doubles, two homers, and eight RBI. That’s an astonishing .481/.920/1.401 slash line for the week. On his week, BA proffered:
Over the six-game series with Greensboro, Consuegra hit nine balls in play at 100-plus mph, with seven of those coming off the bat at 105-plus mph. Since a promotion to Brooklyn at the beginning of July, Consuegra has hit for power, though his approach will lead to some questions as he moves up the ladder to the upper levels of the minors.
When Consuegra was originally signed as an international free agent, he was a well regarded prospect because of his impressive tools. Over his first few minor league seasons, the tools did not necessarily translate to results, and his stock took a bit of a hit. However, with Consuegra has an .882 OPS leading to his promotion to High-A Brooklyn where he has continued to hit.
As noted above, Baty joined Consuegra on this list ranking 18th. Baty joined this list after having a week where he was 10-for-21 with six runs, two homers, and eight RBI. That was an impressive .476/.593/.762 batting line. With respect to his week, BA said:
Since June 1, in fact, he’s hitting .322/.420/.550 with 10 home runs. He’s played mostly third base this season but has dabbled in the corner outfield as well, and his bat could profile at either spot.
Notably, with Baty, the anticipated power has finally come. Over the first two months of the season, he had just three homers while he had a somewhat worrisome .409 OPS. Since June 8, he has begin driving the ball, especially, in the air, and he’s had 10 homers over what is roughly a month-and-a-half stretch with a .582 SLG.
With Consuega and Baty, these past weeks have been emblematic of the potential the Mets thought both players had, and it is a reflection of streaks which began in June. Their production is now garnering increased attention as evidenced by their inclusion on the BA Hot Sheet.
