Bernie Pleskoff from MLB.com named his Top 10 prospects for the upcoming 2016 season and Mets left-handed pitcher Steven Matz was #10 on the list. Unsurprisingly, the Dodgers shortstop prospect Corey Seager was at the top of the list and you can read the rest here.
Here is what Pleskoff had to say about Matz:
“I believe Matz can step into the Mets rotation on a full-time basis as a starter with a solid fastball/curveball combination and very good command. His improved changeup is a pitch he can use to alter the balance or change the eye level of the hitter.”
Coming into the 2015 season both Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus had Matz listed as the #33 best prospect in baseball. He was lower on MLB.com’s list coming in at #66 before the season but is now at #15. He went 4-0 with a 2.27 ERA and 1.234 WHIP in his first six big league starts with the Mets.
He also dominated the hitting friendly Pacific Coast League for the Las Vegas 51’s going 7-4 with a 2.19 ERA and 1.107 WHIP. Both his WHIP and ERA would have lead the PCL if he pitched enough innings to qualify. He struck out 94 batters in 90 innings and allowed just six homeruns.
Once Matz pitches 14.1 innings next season for the Mets he will lose his prospect eligibilty and should be one of the early favorites for the National League Rookie of the Year.
I think matz also started throwing a slider
Definitely did start throwing the Warthen slider which could make him even more devastating next year.
All I can say is that the first three innings he threw in Chicago n the playoffs, he was unhittable. I was so encouraged by that. He was never right stamina wise after suffering the lat injury.
Just have to stay healthy. Stay healthy, and with that stuff?? The production would be great. Excited to see him in 2016.
