Later today, April 5, 2022, the Syracuse Mets will open their season at home against the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. The Opening Day roster was held up partially because of the status of Max Scherzer‘s hamstring, but now that Scherzer has declared himself good to go, the Mets are ready to announce their roster:

Syracuse notes that outfielders Nick Plummer and Travis Jankowski, and right-handed pitcher will be on the Mets taxi squad when they go to Washington, D.C. later this week. Syracuse also notes that pitchers Tim Adleman, Dedniel Nunez, Tom Hackimer, and Josh Walker will begin the season on the injured list.

Pitchers

Thomas Szapucki – LHP
Mike Montgomery – LHP
Connor Grey – RHP

Alex Claudio – LHP
Yennsy Diaz – RHP
Yoan López – RHP

Rob Zastryzny – LHP
Stephen Nogosek – RHP
Andrew Mitchell – LHP
R.J. Alvarez – RHP
Justin Dillon – RHP
Jose Rodriguez – RHP
Antonio Santos – RHP
Anthony Vizcaya – RHP

After dealing with injuries the past few years, Szapucki gets the Opening Day start. He aims to have the same success post ulnar transposition surgery like Jacob deGrom and Steven Matz. If he can regain his control, Szapucki can reestablish himself as a Major League caliber prospect.

Catchers

Patrick Mazeika
Nick Meyer

Nick Dini
Jose Colina

Mazeika made a name for himself with the Mets last season with the walk-off hits. He has also gotten rave reviews for his pitch framing from the Major League staff. He is going to be the first catcher up in the case of an injury. Behind him is Meyer, who is a defensive specialist.

Infielders

Travis Blankenhorn
Cody Bohanek
Matt Reynolds
Mark Vientos

Daniel Palka
Manny Rodriguez

Obviously, the biggest name here, and the top prospect at this level is Vientos. He thrived in his brief stint with Syracuse last season with a 159 wRC+. How quickly he forced his way to the majors this season is going to depend on injuries at the MLB level and how much he progresses defensively at third.

Blankenhorn played briefly with the Mets last season hitting his first career homer. He has versatility and could find himself in the majors at some point due to that versatility and pop in his bat.

Outfielders

Johneshwy Fargas
Khalil Lee
Nick Plummer
Carlos Ríncon

Quinn Brodey

Lee and Plummer raked at the Triple-A level last season. Lee had a 162 wRC+, and Plummer had a 159. Both are on the 40 man roster and could very well be battling amongst themselves for a call-up at some point during the 2022 season.

Ríncon was the Mets return from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Billy McKinney trade. He hit well in his brief stint with Double-A Binghamton with a 128 wRC+. For Fargas, this is a return to the Mets organization after his brief stint with the Chicago Cubs last season.

Coaching Staff

Manager – Kevin Boles
Bench CoachJay Pecci
Hitting CoachJoel Chimelis
Pitching CoachSteve Schrenk

This Syracuse Mets team is one of the best Triple-A squads the Mets organization has had in some time. There is a lot of Major League ready talent, and there is versatility in this roster. Overall, this should be an exciting season both in terms of player development and in the standings.
