Thomas Szapucki continues to show up on the radar, being named to the MiLB Pipeline Prospect Team of the Week. The third such honor for the #8 ranked prospect in the Mets system according to MiLB. A feat that would be impressive on its own, even more so when you consider his season is not even seven weeks old.
He was honored for the latest of his string of dominant performances, which you can read about here. Szapucki struck out 10 in seven innings of two-hit baseball in the tough luck loss.
On the season the 2015 fifth-round draft pick has 65 strikeouts in 41.1 innings between two levels. With a total of 36 baserunners (22 hits, 12 walks, 1 HBP) his WHIP sits at 0.847, and has allowed a total of two earned runs giving him a 0.44 ERA.
Since he was promoted to Brooklyn on July 21, he has yet to allow an earned run and struck out 18 in 12.1 innings while holding opponents to a .140 BAA.

We still have prospects?
Hard to believe right.
Rumor has it the Reds wanted him. The lefty looks like he could move quickly. Great that they held onto him.
Yeah they have tweeners like Ynoa/Gsellman/Lugo who could be good in the majors but numbers in the pitchers hell in Triple A don’t look so great. I think those 3 can be good 4-5 starters. Szapucki looks like he could be more in the next couple of Years. I like for him, Conlon and Justin Dunn to shoot through the minors.
Very excited for Szapucki and Dunn. Also for Church, Flexen and Molina when he returns from TJS. I like Conlon but remain reticent on his likelihood for success in MLB, at least as a starter. Agree he should breeze through the lower minors, but hard to see him sticking as a starter.
Hey John (or Teddy or Michael, etc), assuming Szapucki continues to dominate in Brooklyn, where do you think he starts next year? In Columbia, or do they consider jumping him directly to St. Lucie?
At this point I think it’s certainly possible for him to start at St. Lucie but tough to judge whether Mets will or not. It’s full season either way so why not have him up against better competition. I would get him two starts in Columbia to end the season to kind of gauge that.
I think the big step for him will be AA next year but I’m still skeptical his stuff plays well in upper minors. Smart kid that really knows how to pitch and his delivery is just funky enough maybe.
Ssshh, don’t tell anyone.
Yep. That’s what I was thinking.
Thanks Michael. Appreciate the feedback.
