T.J. Rivera carried the Indios de Mayaguez offense last night in their 7-1 win over the Cangrejoros de Santurce driving in four runs. He was 2 for 4 with a two-run homerun off former Met farmhand Giancarlo Alvarado. He is now hitting .341 with eight RBI during the Puerto Rican Winter League playoffs.
Rafael Montero had a nice bounce back outing for the Leones del Escogido last night going 1.2 scoreless innings. He did allow a sacrifice fly to the first batter he faced on what must have been a questionable call because the Leones catcher and manager were both ejected after the play.
He walked the next batter, then got former Met minor leaguer Jefry Marte to strikeout swinging to end the threat with runners on first and second. He came back out for the 8th inning getting a pop out, fly out, and strike out while working around a single for a scoreless frame.
Montero has now allowed three runs in 8.1 innings with five strikeouts in Dominican Winter League action. This good outing came just two days after giving up two earned runs in 0.2 of an inning.
The Leones beat the Toros del Este 10-5 as the bullpen imploded for the Toros including Mets lefty Dario Alvarez who gave up his first runs of the postseason. He recorded just two outs while allowing two runs on one hit, walk, and a strikeout. He has 4.50 ERA in the playoffs with eight strikeouts in four innings and has pitched three straight days.
