St. Lucie 1, Jupiter 0

St. Lucie ended their four game losing streak last night with a 1-0 win against the Jupiter Hammerheads.  The game featured a terrific pitchers duel between St Lucie’s starter, Domingo Tapia and Jupiter’s starter, Jose Urena. Tapia fired 6.2 scoreless innings, and he yielded only two hits.  Ureana stifled St. Lucie’s lineup. He allowed no runs and only five hits, and only one hit went for extra bases.

However, St. Lucie managed to break the scoreless tie in the top of the ninth.  Matt Reynolds started the rally with a line drive single to left field with one out.  Nelfi Zapata and Charley Thurber followed by reaching base on a walk and an infield single to load the bases. The next batter, Gilbert Gomez hit a ball in the hole to the shortstop, and he managed to beat out the throw to first base, which allowed the winning run to score.  It appeared that Gomez was out, but the umpire ruled that Jupiter’s first baseman, Ryan Rieger came off the bag.  Jupiter’s short stop Austin Nola was charged with a throwing error on the play.

Tim Byrdak closed out the game in bottom of the 9th inning for St. Lucie.  He did not allow any runners on, and he struck out two.

St. Lucie will play game two of the series against Jupiter on Thursday at 6:30. The pitching matchup will be Hansel Robels vs. Jake Esch.
