In the latest mock draft from The Athletic by way of Keith Law, the Mets selected two collegiate talents, one batter and one arm.

Law has the Mets selecting Arizona C Daniel Susac with the eleventh selection in the draft. Of the selection, Law notes that “I know someone will say ‘But the Mets have Francisco Alvarez!’ but the truth is teams don’t, and shouldn’t, draft for need — you take the best player available, and Susac might even go ahead of this spot anyway.”

So far in his second year at Arizona, Susac is hitting .368/.434/.583 with nine homers and 52 RBIs. He is understood to be one of the top catchers in the class, if not the top catcher period.

At 14, Law suggests Alabama LHP Connor Prielipp to the Mets. Prielipp; however, comes out of the class with immediate injury concerns. Prielipp will not throw a pitch this season due to Tommy John Surgery, but is still expected to go early in this class.

Law says that “Prielipp will throw for scouts on Monday, May 23 — I plan to be there as well — which will mark his first appearance in any form since Tommy John surgery in April of 2021. Whether this is a realistic guess will be a lot clearer after that, but if he looks healthy at all I think he’ll get a deal in the first round.”

In his 28 total collegiate innings, Prielipp owns a 0.96 ERA and a WHIP of 0.71. He only threw seven innings in his 2021 campaign before undergoing Tommy John.

Overall, the Mets have two first round picks and five picks over the first 90 in the draft. For those interested in more thought on the process by which the Mets draft players, they should turn to MMO‘s interview with Mets director of amateur scouting Marc Tramuta.
