As reported by MMN‘s own Matthew Brownstein, the New York Mets have promoted INF Mark Vientos from the Gulf Coast League to the Kingsport Mets. The Kingsport Mets have four games remaining in their season.
After an initial adjustment period for the young infielder, Vientos has hit better over the past month. In that time frame, he is hitting .280/.327/.441 with six doubles, three homers, and 14 RBI. This stretch has accounted for half of his doubles and three of his four homers. Overall, Vientos has played 47 games this season splitting time fairly evenly between shortstop (19 games), third base (14 games), and DH (14 games). On the season, Vientos is hitting .259/.316/.397 with 12 doubles, four homers, and 24 RBI.
Vientos, 17, was the Mets second round pick this year out of American Heritage High School (Plantation, FL). He was recently ranked by MMN as the Mets 10th best prospect.

what a great accomplish for a 17 yr old! let him get a week or whatever of ABs at the higher level and i guess start him back there next April. good sign
Wouldn’t he start Brooklyn or possibly even Cola next year? Would be surprised tos ee him in Kingsport
IMO they don’t push him like that. He’ll be 18 all next year. I say they giving him taste of kingsport to learn field etc and gear up for them next April. But who knows. Season don’t start till june maybe they sneek him into fireflies lineup for like 10 ABs ala Rosario and see what happens.
This is my first year following the minors so I definitely am not an expert. Just hope they are aggressive with him and that it pays off !
It’s odd because the Kingsport season ends before the GCL, so he’s actually going to be losing playing time.
Probably just to test him out. He played well but not great, still has adjustments along with physical/mental maturity to do. Love to see him in BK at some point next year. I still think he develops some real power and will be a good prospect for years to come.
Think they will try him in Columbia then have him play instructs then brooklyn. I think the push for a few games in Kingsport shows how well he is progressing and want to challenge him. Giminez wad a guy they gave a shot at full season ball and has looked good. I hate when the do Brooklyn then send to sally league. I know some guys just aren’t ready but to me it’s like a waste of year for development.
Question. In the story about Jeremy Vasquez two stories down it states that Jeremy was promoted from Kingsport to Brooklyn. In this story is says Mark Vientos was promoted from Brooklyn to Kingsport. Color me puzzled.
Columbia is higher than Brooklyn, they wont send him down after going up unless he’s struggling.
Its a difference of two games. They probably see more value in getting him a look at the better play than in those two games.
In reality, where he goes next season will be based heavbily on what he does next spring. With kids these young, some of them grow and develop a lot more than others in one off season.
The Brooklyn season starts later than Columbia’s, they have players destined for Brooklyn start at higher levels lots of times just to get them playing. They did it with Ricardo Cespedes
Really great kid! Lots of talent. Family attended GCL games to support, which was really cool. Nice people. Lots of time to grow and polish skills. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/487b3c61ad06aad88f045475588b1f070f445186208e262561776e05399f8314.jpg
if he does start in Sally league maybe juts to get a taste then goes to BK after I’d be fine with that. I agree with the other comment that it depends how he develops over the winter and what he does in spring.
That’s good to hear. Good looking 3rd baseman with a good supportive family and power potential sounds like our injured beloved Captain.
Mets system may collectively be down in rankings; (mostly due to promotions and injuries) but Vientos appears to be next in the line of rapid ranking climbers. Following in Rosario and Gimenez footsteps.
They do it only on rare occasion, not lots of times, and haven’t done it at all sicne De Podesta left.
They didn’t do it with Ricardo Cespedes at all. R Ces started in extended spring training. He was promoted on May 10 and only after injuries hit Columbia’s OF.
What they have been doing since DePo left is taking kids from XST and moving them over to the St Lucie roster for a few games or a week then demoting them again, sometimes two or three times during the XST time frame here and there.
