Adam Rubin of ESPN NY reports that Wilmer Flores is expected to be promoted for Friday’s series opener against the Phillies.

In Wednesday nights game with Vegas, Flores went 3-for-6 with a double and two RBIs.

May 7 – 11:00 PM

Adam Rubin of ESPN NY reports that Wilmer Flores is expected to be promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas, taking the roster spot that had belonged to Omar Quintanilla, who is due to be designated for assignment.

Rubin adds that the Mets are dissatisfied with their production at shortstop and Ruben Tejada‘s playing time will diminish.

The Mets stopped using Flores at shortstop in the minors after the 2011 season, but decided to reinstate him at the position this season and in 24 games at Las Vegas, he has committed seven errors and has a .941 fielding percentage.

In his last nine games, not including Wednesday night, Flores is batting .462 (12 for 26), with seven runs scored, two doubles, four home runs, 13 RBI’s, and two walks. He has also hit safely in seven out of the nine games.

Thoughts From Kirk C.

This took me by surprise. All the reports coming out were that they didn’t think Flores could handle shortstop now that they’ve gotten a look at him in Triple-A. The seven errors seemed to back that up. However, I guess they’re just fed up with the lack of offense both from the team and from the shortstop position. That’s assuming he’s going to play shortshop, since I can’t imagine they’d call him up just to place him on the bench.
