Flores 5

Wilmer Flores, back with the Mets, started at shortstop on Friday against the Phillies and this may be the start of a permanent fix.  No one really knows how Flores will handle shortstop, but if Friday is any indication, than he should be just fine.

You have to give him the benefit of doubt, especially since he hasn’t played the position since the in a while and especially not on the big stage.  And after only a few starts during Spring Training, he had to go to Vegas to work on his old position and get his feet wet again.  But Flores proved that he could handle playing there in Triple A and now, after the Mets other two shortstops proved that they can not hit enough to keep their position, Flores gets his chance to prove that not only can he play it, but he will keep it.

“I’m going to prove it,” Flores tells Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.

The hope is that he becomes a steady presence in the lineup and continues to hit.  He proved that enough tonight with his two singles in five at bats. And if you combine Fridays game with his minor league stats from the past week and a half, he actually has a six game hit streak and is batting .481. You can say he has a hot bat, and the next few days with the Mets, he will get to prove that all of the hype is not just that, hype.

Even his manager has the confidence that he will be an impact player on the big league level.

“Ever since I have had him in 2011, he has been a run producer,” said Backman tells Kristie Ackert of the NY Daily News. “He can hit. I don’t know what the plans are for how they are going to use him, but if he’s given the chance, Flo can hit.”

Flores understands the magnitude of the chance he has been given again, “I know I can handle it [shortstop], I’m just going to show that I can.”

So now the future is the present and his time is here to not only prove that he can be a big league ball player, but that he will one day turn himself into an all star.  Might be too much to ask for, but with how he has handled minor league pitching in his career, the hope is that he can do the same with the Mets and prove that finally he is where he belongs.
