Lefty Joel Huertas got into his first playoff action last night for the Cangrejeros Santurce pitching 1.2 innings in their 4-0 loss to the Indios de Mayaguez. He didn’t allow a run on one hit, two walks, and two strikeouts. The 19-year old struggled in the Puerto Rican League regular season with a 4.67 ERA and 1.62 WHIP but did strikeout 20 batters in 17.1 innings.
Johnny Monell was 1 for 4 with a RBI as the number four hitter for the Indios. He hit .341 during the 12-game round robin first round of the playoffs.
T.J. Rivera went 0 for 4 with a strikeout lowering his playoff average down to .286 for the Indios. Last night he batted fifth and played third base as the Indios dropped game one of the best-of-7 series in the championship round.
In the Dominican League championship round the Leones del Escogido beat the Tigres del Licey 3-2 to take a commanding 3-0 series lead in the best-of-9. No current Mets players were involved in the game. Rafael Montero struggled on Thursday night for the Leones giving up one run on four hits and recording only one out.
