I have been waiting for this moment for almost three months; to be able to say that we are only two weeks away from the start of a new baseball season.
This winter has seemed so long and with the Super Bowl finally ending the football season on Sunday, all sports radio shows can now turn their focus to the 2014 baseball season. And yes, I am going to pedict this, and others may disagree, but this is going to be an exciting year, not only for the Mets big club, but also for the farm system.
This has to be one of the most exciting seasons for the Mets organization as a whole. Not only did they finally make a splash in the winter with the signings of Curtis Granderson and Bartolo Colon, but they also have one of the best farm systems in the game. Actually the Mets minor league system was ranked #6 by Keith Law, and that says a lot especially after what was accomplished in 2013 when all six teams, from Rookie Ball to Triple A, were involved in their leagues playoff hunt. Four of the six made the playoffs and one, the Savannah Sand Gnats, won their league Championship.
The one key thing I see with the signing of Granderson is that David Wright finally has some geniune protection. Also, I do realize that there are many holes in the rest of the lineup, and many questions marks as to who will play first, who is actually on second and what will the lineup finally be; but there is also promise from within, which that makes the season worth looking forward too.
With the Mets inviting approximately 21 of their prospects, headed by Top Pitching Prospect Noah Syndergaard, to work out with the big club during spring training, it will turn out to be an exciting spring of watching the future stars compete against major league talent.
There is a lot of promise for this upcoming season, maybe as much promise as the team has had in a long time. Too many losing seasons, actually five straight to be exact, and even though others may say, it will end the same way, Mets fans have to differ. Yes, the Mets may not have the resources that their cross town rivals have, nor can the Mets spend like they do, I mean who spends half a billion dollars in one off season. So owning the city again may not be easy, but all the Mets need is a good season, and a great turn around from the previous years. What is that great quote from the movie Field of Dreams? “If you build it, they will come.” Exactly!
In the Summer of 2013, Matt Harvey brought hope back to Queens; and now the baton is passed over to Zack Wheeler as a possible temporary replacement for Harvey as the Ace of the staff. But wait, the team also has Syndergaard poised to make his major league debut and also make it a memorable experience. And it doesn’t stop there, because there are more than a few prospects in the organization that will truly surprise some people and make their own impact to the team in a few seasons, if not this year as well.
It is all starting to come together for the Mets and even though their payroll is no where near fans would hope, nor will the Mets field an all star team, the one thing that the Mets do have is youth on their side and as other teams have shown, like the Tampa Rays and the Pittsburgh Pirates, having a good farm system, can set up the organization for many years to come.
The 2014 season will indeed be an exciting one for the whole organization, and the fans have the best seat in the house to watch it all unfold. Let’s Go Mets!
