Wuilmer Becerra continued his great winter ball season with a 3 for 6 night for the Tigres de Aragua extending his hitting streak to six games. He knocked in his 10th run and scored a run while he was slid up to the third spot in the lineup after hitting mostly in the bottom of the lineup. In 70 at bats in the Venezuelan League he has hit .371/.375/.471 with 11 runs scored and two homeruns.
The rest of the Mets action in winter ball last night:
- Xorge Carrillo – 0 for 4, strikeout (.272/.323/.364 in 173 at bats for Aguilas de Mexicali).
- John Mora – Recently added to Tigres de Cartagena roster in the Colombian League. Has gone 1 for 8 with two RBI and a walk in his first two games.
- Alberto Baldonado – Has been pitching in the Panama Winter League for the Indios de Urraca. Has 1.78 ERA in 12.1 innings.
Asdrubal Cabrera played in his second game for the Leones del Caracas going 1 for 5 with a RBI single. He was o for 3 in his first game and has been the designated hitter in both.
The Toros del Este lost 7-1 in their second game of the round robin in the playoffs and Alejandro De Aza was 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. He was the designated hitter for the second straight game and is now o for 7 with a walk.
Becerra is a hit machine! Lack of walks is concerning but he might just be getting a lot of pitches to hit? I haven’t been watching his at bats.
Woot woot woot! Keep it up Becerra, we might see you at Bingo in 2016 mid season call up.
That would be great to see him in Bingo at any point next season!
Lack of walks is definitely a concern but tough to tell without seeing the at bats too like you said.
I asked this in another thread….Michael, which prospect do you see most increasing his value in 2016.
I said Sanchez…the other names were Flexon and Becerra.
Who do you think will put himself on the map in 2016?
Michael, are you able to watch the games or are you just able to see highlights?
Mostly just highlights, rarely I will be able to see some streamed online in spanish.
I think Sanchez has already boosted his value quite a bit with the season in he had in 2015. Still won’t be see him get big mainstream/common fan attention until he plays full season ball in my opinion. Flexen is another guy that opened some eyes by just being on the mound last year. He will be in a lot of Mets top 25 prospect lists. He could be a guy that makes a big jump though, kind of surprises people that aren’t keyed in on prospects. Becerra has won over guys that cover the Mets prospects but still haven’t seen him win over BA, BP, and scouts. This year should be the season he does that. I think one name that is going to surprise people and boost his value the most in 2016 is Gsellman. I know he is on a lot of radars and some top 10’s already but I think he takes the next step making him ready for a MLB rotation. I absolutely love his sinker and his curveball improved last year. Its rare to see a pitcher miss barrels as effectively as he does.
Do you know what his problem was last season?
He seemed to dominate A ball but struggled some in AA (the same as Gant by the way). Was it the fact that he simply wasnt ready for the upper level or was there another reason for his struggles?
Michael, I’m never seen Becerra play. Do you think he has the athleticism, range, arm and good enough reads off the bat to eventually play a passable CF in MLB or is he strictly a corner OFer?
Strictly a corner guy for me, perfect fit for right field with his strong arm.
Thanks Michael.
