There are a few options for the New York Mets to try if they decide to demote Ike Davis to the minors. Josh Satin, Wilmer Flores, Andrew Brown, and Zach Lutz all seem to be in the conversation.

With Brown recently injuring his oblique, Lutz looked to be the favorite. He has more corner infield experiene, and currently resides on the Mets’ 40-man roster.  Adam Rubin reported earlier tonight that Lutz exited today’s game with the 51s in the fourth inning with an apparent oblique injury. Seems like that ailment is spreading around the team, unfortunately.

Lutz is hitting .277/.360/.419 with four home runs and 26 RBIs on the season, but has really picked things up since the calendar turned to May. He was hitting .218 through his first 21 games of the season, but found his groove this month, posting a .343/.415/.543 line. This solid showing includes a .424 clip in his last week and a half. Out of those 10 games, he’s collected more than one base hit in five of them.

This is a tough time to watch Zach get sidelined with an injury like this. While he may not be the best choice to call up because he hasn’t played first base very much (four times this season), his bat was making a convincing argument.

The Mets will have to turn to someone else if the organization decides Davis needs to spend a week or two in the minor leagues.
