The day of the 2016 Major League draft is finally here. Recently, we’ve talked about five players the Mets could draft, and five college bats they could target. Now, while it’s not very likely the Mets target a prep bat in the first round, there are still a few that are intriguing and would be great fits for the future of this ball club. Lets take a look at five names that could potentially be there when the Mets are on the clock.
#5 Akil Baddoo, OF
Ht: 6’1″ Wt: 195 School: Salem (G.A.) HS B/T: L/L Age: 8/16/1998 (17)
Commitment: Kentucky
Profile: Akil has an intriguing power/speed combo and has improved in both departments over the last year. He has the potential to hit for both power and average. He has a loose left-handed swing with plenty of bat speed. With his plus speed, he has the potential to be a 20-20 player in the Majors. He doesn’t have the strongest arm, which could land him in a corner spot, most likely left field.
#4 Carter Kieboom, 3B
Ht: 6’2″ Wt: 185 School: Walton (G.A.) HS B/T: R/S Age: 9/3/1997 (18)
Commitment: Clemson
Profile: Has excellent hand-eye coordination and a mature approach. Barrels balls repeatedly. He has great bat speed and loft in his right-handed swing. He should have at least average power once he fills out and matures into his body. He has the actions, soft hands and solid arm strength to get the job done at third base in pro ball. He can also switch-pitch, but he probably won’t be pitching at the next level.
#3 Nolan Jones, SS/3B
Ht: 6’3″ Wt: 195 School: Holy Ghost (PA) HS B/T: L/R Age: 5/7/1998
Commitment: Virginia
Profile: Has good bat speed and excellent raw power. He’s an average runner, but has added some weight, which may have slowed him down a bit. He has good hands and a solid arm. Some teams may feel that he has a decent chance to stick at short, but some say he could be a great offensive minded 2nd baseman, and others think he could play well in left field. The position shouldn’t be a concern right now, as his bat will get him very far.
#2 Josh Lowe, 3B/RHP
Ht: 6’4″ Wt: 190 School: Pope (G.A.) HS B/T: L/R Age: 2/2/1998 (18)
Commitment: Florida State
Profile: Lowe can be streaky at the plate, but he has a quick and controlled left-handed swing. He has a chance to hit for power as he grows into his frame. He has plus speed and a great arm, which should translate into solid defense at third base, though some scouts say they could see him in center field.
#1 Will Benson, OF
Ht: 6’6″ Wt: 220 School: The Westminster (GA.) Schools B/T: L/L Age: 6/6/1998 (17)
Commitment: Duke
Profile: Benson’s bat speed and strength give him well-above-average raw power. He does, however, fall into the trap of trying to do too much sometimes. He hasn’t had a great spring with the bat, but still has enough offensive upside and all-around potential to go in the first round. He’s a solid runner and played center field in high school, he will more than likely move to right field in pro ball and definitely has the arm strength for the position. He also has experience at first base, where he could play in the big leagues as well.
I read in a recent BA article that the Mets were tied to prep bats. The most recent mock draft had the Mets picking Rutherford. Maybe they go with a prep bat over Craig?
Looking at the front office draft history, they haven’t been shy about being patient and going with what they believe is the higher upside.
Personally I think that mock was done for shock value only (Clicks!) but I guess we will have to see. I think the Mets will go with the best player available regardless of prep/college.
Interesting Jim Callis said the Mets could make a run at Matt Manning or Rutherford.
19. Mets
Callis: Matt Manning, RHP, Sheldon HS (Sacramento, Calif.)
New York has been tied to college performers all spring, such as Wake Forest third baseman Will Craig and Virginia catcher Matt Thaiss. The Mets’ pair of first-rounders gives them enough bonus-pool cash to make a run at Rutherford or Manning — son of former NBA player Rick Manning — who’s floating a $5 million price tag to get him to give up the opportunity to play baseball and basketball at Loyola Marymount.

I’d really like to see them grab Alex Kirilloff OF, Kieboom, Jones, or Lowe. Craig is tempting but once I watched some video, it’s clear that he’s a first baseman. Doesn’t have the agility for third. The bat was decent but I think the guys I listed have a higher ceiling although they may take longer to develop. Take the best talent available, not what they need the most.
C´mon, you have to draft Baddoo and Kieboom just for the names! Imagine the headlines! They´d instantly be fan favorites and their merch would sell a ton… 😉 Half kidding…
