After having been designated for assignment to clear room for Chasen Shreve on the Opening Day roster, right-handed pitcher Jordan Yamamoto has cleared waivers and has been outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse. As of the moment, it is not clear what role Yamamoto will play for Syracuse.
So far, Syracuse has started Thomas Szapucki, Mike Montgomery, Connor Grey (twice), Cole Gordon, and Jose Rodriguez. Theoretically, there would still be room for Yamamoto to join the rotation. However, that is far from certain, especially with Yamamoto showing decreased velocity in spring training.
Previous Report: April 6, 2022
As previously reported, LHP Chasen Shreve has made the Opening Day roster necessitating the New York Mets to make room on their 40 man roster. That move was to designate Jordan Yamamoto for assignment.
There were indications Yamamoto’s roster spot might be in jeopardy when he was the first player this spring reassigned to minor league spring training. That came after Yamamoto showed decreased velocity in a simulation game. It should also be noted Yamamoto was not named to the Syracuse Mets Opening Day roster.
Last season, Yamamoto made two appearances with the Mets. He was 1-1 with a 4.05 ERA, 1.800 WHIP, 2.7 BB/9, and a 4.1 K/9. He also made six starts and one relief appearance for Triple-A Syracuse. He was 0-3 with a 5.96 ERA, 1.500 WHIP, 2.8 BB/9, and a 7.9 K/9. Yamamoto dealt with a shoulder injury which cost him most of the 2021 season.
With Yamamoto designated for assignment, the only minor league starters remaining on the 40 man roster are Thomas Szapucki and Jose Butto. Part of the reason for that is the Mets are carrying Tylor Megill and David Peterson on the Opening Day roster.
With respect to Szapucki, he struggled and took the loss in the opener for the Syracuse Mets. He topped out at 91 MPH with his fastball which is a step backwards for a pitcher who has thrown in the mid 90s.
Later, Syracuse will try to win their first game of the season, and they will give the ball to Mike Montgomery. It will be All You Can Eat Night at the ballpark.
The Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Brooklyn Cyclones, and St. Lucie Mets will have their Opening Day on the road on Friday. The Rumble Ponies have announced their Opening Day roster featuring Francisco Alvarez, Brett Baty, and Ronny Mauricio. The rosters for the Brooklyn and St. Lucie have not yet been announced but should be made available in the next day or so.
