Last week we did a Winter League update to help keep you up to date on Mets minor leaguers. This week we are doing an update on the Mets players who are playing in the Arizona Fall League. All the Mets prospect are playing for the Scottsdale Scorpions, which is led by Mets first base coach Tom Goodwin.

We will start with the best Mets prospect Gavin Cecchini. The Mets first round pick (12th overall) in the 2012 draft made his Major League debut this season. In the Majors, Cecchini went two for six with two doubles and two runs batted in. Cecchini played most of his season in Triple-A Las Vegas, were he hit .325/.390/.448 in 117 games. Cecchini tied his career high with eight home runs and drove in 55.

Cecchini major issue this season was the errors he made at shortstop. Many (including me) expected Cecchini to play a lot of second in the Arizona Fall League. Cecchini could very well be in the mix for the second base job next spring and could use some innings learning the position. The AFL is the perfect place for that.

Cecchini has played just one game at second while batting .250/.347/.400 in eleven games. Cecchini has hit three doubles and a homerun while driving in six runs. He has walked more than he struck out in those games, having walked seven times and struck out six.

The Mets player who gets the most attention is Tim Tebow. Tebow, who signed a minor league deal with the Mets this season, has struggled with the level of play in the AFL. The former NFL quarterback has gone just 5 for 37 in eleven games with the Scorpions. Tebow has only one extra base hit (a double) and has driven in one. He has struck out twelve times in eleven games.

The next two position players could be taken in the Rule 5 draft (if they aren’t added on the 40-man this offseason). Matt Oberste and Champ Stuart are trying to showcase what they can do, but much with different results.

The speedy center fielder, Stuart,  is playing really well in the AFL after a disappointing season in the minors in 2016. Stuart combined his 2016 season with the St. Lucie Mets and Binghamton Mets hitting, .240/.314/.349 in 114 games.

Stuart’s main skill is his speed. In 2016 he stole 40 bases while getting caught just six times. Stuart also showed some power as he hit eight home runs, twelve doubles and seven triples. The biggest issue for Stuart is his strikeouts, he struck out 168 times in 114 games.

In the AFL, Stuart has shined hitting .372/.400/.535 in 12 games. Stuart has hit four doubles, one home run, and has four runs batted in. He;s shown off his 80 grade speed with eight stolen bases but has still struck out 11 times.  Will he be protected?

Oberste on the other hand has struggled in the AFL after a solid season for the Binghamton Mets. The first baseman and Eastern League All Star game MVP (four hits/four RBI day) hit .283/.340/.409 in 124 games this season. Oberste, who was mostly a designated hitter because of Dominic Smith, played 35 games at first and third this season.

In the AFL, Oberste has struggled mightily going one for 29 with just one walk. That’s a .034/.065/.034 stat line in eight games. Oberste got on base for the first time in his seventh game and got his first hit in his eight game.

marcos molina

On the pitching side, the Mets have minor league starter and our number 18 prospect Marcos Molina in the AFL. Molina missed the entire 2016 season after getting Tommy John surgery. Molina has pitched 12.2 innings in his return to the mound, he has a 4.26 ERA in 5 games (2 starts). Over the 12.2 total innings Molina, allowed twelve hits and six walks while, recording five strikeouts.

The other starting pitcher the Mets send to the AFL is Corey Oswalt. Oswalt was limited to 15 games (14 starts) in 2016 due to an injury. Oswalt pitched a total of 68.2 innings, 67.2 innings with the St. Lucie Mets. With St. Lucie he went 4-2 with a 4.12 ERA. He allowed 73 hits and 18 walks while striking out 68.

In the AFL, Oswalt has pitched 18 innings allowing eleven runs (six earned) in five starts. Oswalt has pitched to an even 3.00 ERA giving up 16 hits and eight walks while striking out 15.

The final two pitchers the Mets have send to the AFL are closers Corey Taylor and David Roseboom. Taylor who was the St. Lucie Mets closer in 2016 was the only Mets in the AFL All Star game. Taylor pitched a perfect frame collecting a strikeout and two ground outs on Saturday night.

Taylor pitched in 53 innings collecting 20 saves, while pitching to a 1.87 ERA during the regular season for St. Lucie. In the AFL, Taylor has gone 10.1 innings, striking out 10 and pitching to a 2.61 ERA. In that span, he has struck out ten batters and walked only one.

The lefty David Roseboom is following up his great 2016 season with a good AFL as well. He was dominant during the regular pitching in 57.2 innings holding opposing hitters to just a .170 batting average. Roseboom collected 14 saves, had a 1.87 ERA, struck out 54 and walked eight. Roseboom was even more dominant against lefties who hit just .141 against him. He had a 0.79 WHIP against lefties as he was almost untouchable. Lefty specialist for the Mets soon?

In the AFL, Roseboom has struggled with his control, but has still puts up solid numbers. In 8.2 innings, Roseboom has walked eight and struck out twelve. Roseboom has allowed two runs (one earned) on 4 hits giving him a 1.04 ERA.

Overall, the Scottsdale Scorpions have struggled with and Arizona Fall League worst 8-14 record. The Scorpions will return to action today at  6:35pm ET against the Mesa Solar Sox.
