Dominic Hamel, Douglas Orellana Earn Pitcher of the Month Honors for September

Two Mets pitchers earned ‘pitcher of the month’ honors for their respective leagues for September 2023. Right-handed pitcher Douglas Orellana (St. Lucie) was named pitcher of the month for the Florida State League, and right-handed pitcher Dominic Hamel (Binghamton) earned player of the month for the Eastern League.

Douglas Orellana, RHP – St. Lucie

Orellana, 21 did not have a great month in August. The right-handed pitcher gave up 16 earned runs over the course of 16 1/3 innings pitched, striking out 18 and had an ERA of 8.82 on the month. Coming off of a rough 0-2 month on the mound, Orellana was looking to bounce back and regain his control in September, and he did just that.

Orellana’s final two outings of the season came on September 2 when St. Lucie traveled to Tampa and September 9 back at Clover Park against the Daytona Tortugas. The right-handed pitcher ended his 2023 strong with two quality, strong outings.

On September 2 against Tampa, Orellana threw 6 2/3 shutout innings, giving up just two hits and one walk. He struck out eight, but earned a no-decision in that game.

On September 9 when St. Lucie faced Daytona at Clover Park, Orellana threw four innings, giving up one earned run on three hits, one walk, and struck out eight. He had earned the win in that game to go 1-0 on the month.

Accumulated for the month of September, Orellana had a 0.84 ERA. He gave up one earned run on five hits in 10 2/3 innings pitched, walked two, and struck out 16. His WHIP for the month was 0.66 as he closed out his season well.

Overall in 2023, Orellana closed out his 4-4, with a 4.53 ERA. He struck out 112 over the course of 89 1/3 innings pitched, collected one save, and struck out 112 of his opponents in his first season with Low-A St. Lucie.

Dominic Hamel, RHP – Binghamton

Hamel, the MMN’s 14th ranked prospect, was drafted in 2021 with the Mets’ No. 81 overall pick in round three of the 2021 MLB draft.

This was Hamel’s first season with Double-A Binghamton, and he closed it out strong. Per Mike Mayer of Metsmerized Online, Hamel tossed 14 scoreless innings with 24 strikeouts to close out his regular season 1-0. He also threw 7 2/3 scoreless innings in a playoff game that sent Binghamton to the finals.

Hamel gave up just five hits and five walks in September. He had a WHIP of 0.71 and ERA of 0.00 over the course of three games started.

In total in 2023, Hamel was 8-6, with a 3.85 ERA. He struck out 160 over the course of 114 innings pitched.
