Last night the Columbia Fireflies played the first home game in their history as well as the first game ever at Spirit Communications Park. The Home Opener went great on and off the field as the Fireflies won their fourth straight game while they set a new Columbia baseball record with 9,077 fans in attendance.

It was the first South Atlantic League game in Columbia, South Carolina since 2004 when the Mets affiliated Capitol City Bombers played at Capitol City Stadium.

They took on the Greenville Drive (formerly Capitol City Bombers), winning 4-1 behind another strong outing by the Fireflies pitching staff which has been the strength of the team early on. P.J. Conlon, making his second start of the year, pitched six good innings allowing only one run and striking out five. The Columbia staff had 29 straight innings without allowing a walk before reliever Seth Davis issued one in the 7th inning last night.

In 66 innings to start franchise history the Columbia pitchers have struck out 77 (2nd most in SAL) compared to only 23 walks (4th fewest) and have a sparkling 2.73 ERA.

The offensive stars last night where the same two guys that have carried the Fireflies to start the season in 2015 draft picks Vinny Siena (1 for 3, 2B, RBI) and David Thompson (1 for 4, 2B, RBI). Siena leads the league with seven walks and Thompson is tied for the league lead with 9 RBI while hitting safely in all eight games to start the year. Full recap for the opener is here.

Eight games into the inaugural season for the Fireflies and they have lost on three walk-offs, thrown a combined no-hitter and now have a four game winning streak. Thomas McIlraith, who started the no-hitter, will start the game tonight as Fireflies fans wonder what the team will do next in what has been a historic start to the franchise.
