Much like Baseball Prospectus did today, Baseball America has released their Top 100 prospects list. While both Baseball Prospectus and Baseball America agree Andres Gimenez is a top 30 prospect, they have different opinions on Peter Alonso and Ronny Mauricio.

With respect to Alonso, Baseball America ranked the slugging first baseman as the 48th best prospect, which is eight spots lower. Also while Baseball Prospectus regards Alonso as the best first base prospect, Baseball America sees him as the third best first base prospect. The disparity between how both outlets view Alonso should come as no surprise as Baseball America says of Alonso, “With pronounced strengths (power) and weaknesses (defense), Alonso is a divisive prospect with a wide range of outcomes.”

In a pleasant surprise, Baseball America also ranked Mauricio as the 98th best prospect in baseball. The 17 year old prospect received a then Mets record $2.1 million signing bonus when he was signed out of the Dominican Republic. So far, he has rewarded the Mets belief in him. In his first season as a professional, he split time between the Gulf Coast and Kingsport hitting .273/.304/.410 with 16 doubles, three triples, three homers, and 35 RBI in 57 games.

With respect to Gimenez, he was ranked 30th by Baseball America, which is eight spots higher than where he was ranked by Baseball Prospectus. In ranking him higher, Baseball America said of Gimenez, “The speedy, slick-fielding shortstop took a step forward offensively in the Florida State League; look for him to take another one in 2019.”

If not for the blockbuster trade with the Mariners, the Mets would have had four top prospects with Jarred Kelenic being ranked 68th. Of course, if other Mets prospects like Francisco Alvarez, David Peterson, Mark Vientos, and Thomas Szapucki take a step forward in 2019, they could also find themselves in consideration for the midseason or the 2020 list.
