The New York Mets picked Liberty North High School shortstop Trey Snyder with their fifth-round selection on Monday. Snyder was the 144th overall pick, which carries a slot value of $476,200.

Snyder, who stands at 6-foot-1, 197 pounds, is a Tennessee commit. Entering the draft, he was ranked No. 155 overall by MLB Pipeline. They had this to say about him:

The Missouri high school ranks feature three interesting shortstops. The consensus is that Snyder’s polish and floor make him the best prospect of the trio, giving him the edge over Tytus Cissell’s athleticism and Drew Dickerson’s physicality. If he doesn’t go early enough in the Draft to sign, Snyder could make an immediate impact as a freshman at Tennessee next spring.

Gatorade’s Missouri high school player of the year, Snyder is a steady right-handed hitter who makes good swing decisions and provides consistent contact. He didn’t show much power on the showcase circuit last summer but has gained some strength and is hitting the ball harder this spring. His biggest backers believe he has 20-homer upside, though others think his pop is more fringy.

Similar questions surround Snyder’s ability to remain at shortstop. While he has flashed plus straight-line speed in the past, he has produced below-average home-to-first times this spring after adding muscle. He has reliable hands, solid arm strength and a good internal clock at shortstop, but diminished quickness could land him at third base.

Perfect Game had Snyder ranked as the No. 69 prep prospect in this year’s draft class. MMO’s Michael Mayer added that his exit velocities were in the 99th percentile among the high school class. He was Gatorade’s Missouri High School Player of the Year.

Future Star Series had this to say about Snyder:

Snyder is a well-rounded player with offensive tools and the potential to stick up the middle on defense. At the plate, Snyder employs a rounded leg-kick that can get him in trouble with timing, but when he’s locked in Snyder absolutely pummels the ball to all-fields, producing some truly impressive shots to his pull-side. He’s a fantastic athlete and it shows in his load, swing and follow-through at the plate. On the dirt, Snyder again showcases big athleticism, getting low to the ground and receiving ground balls out in front. He’s got exceptional hands with a quick transfer and an above average arm as well. Depending on where his physical development goes, Snyder could end up at second base or third base, but for now, the athlete and actions suggest a shortstop long-term.

Previously, the Mets drafted Carson Benge in the first round, Jonathan Santucci in the second round, Nate Dohm in the third round and Eli Serrano III in the fourth round. Mets Minors recapped the Mets’ first day of the draft here.
