MMN Recap: Francisco Álvarez, Brett Baty Homer for Brooklyn

AAA: Buffalo Bisons (13-10) 3, Syracuse Mets (8-17) 2 Box Score

Mazeika and Lee rejoined the Syracuse Mets from the big league club on Tuesday night, and they both reached base twice. Mazeika collected two hits, including a RBI double in the top of the 5th inning. Lee led off the second inning with a double, and he came around to score on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Nick Conti.

Reyes struggled early before settling into six strong innings for Syracuse. The righty issued a leadoff walk in the first and gave up a run-scoring single two batters later. Reyes then pitched four scoreless innings to get through the fifth. In the sixth, Reyes gave up another leadoff walk, and the baserunner later scored on a sacrifice fly to give Buffalo a 2-1 lead. With the game tied 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth, Buffalo hitters loaded the bases with two outs and Roney issued a walk-off walk to earn the loss.

Right-hander Tylor Megill was promoted to Syracuse before the game, he had a 3.12 ERA and 14.5 K/9 in five starts for Double-A Binghamton to begin the season.

AA: Binghamton Rumble Ponies (5-19) 6, New Hampshire Fisher Cats (9-15) 4 Box Score

The Rumble Ponies loaded the bases with one out in the second and got on the board after a wild pitch allowed DH Desmond Lindsay to score. SS Manny Rodriguez then lined a one-out single to left field, driving in two more runs. In the top of the third, Binghamton loaded the bases with no outs, and Vasquez scored on a double play to give the Rumble Ponies a 4-1 lead. Vasquez led off the fifth with a walk, and he scored on a fielder’s choice three batters later. Binghamton loaded the bases again with two outs in the sixth, and a bases-loaded walk to Yoel Romero plated Rodriguez.

Dibrell ran into trouble in the second after issuing a leadoff walk. The righty retired the next two batters, but base runner Gabriel Moreno advanced to third. After Dibrell walked LJ Talley to put runners on the corners, the Fisher Cats pulled off a double steal of second base and home plate to score their first run of the night. Dibrell hit the leadoff batter in the fourth, and the runner later came around to score an unearned run after a single and a throwing error by the shortstop, Rodriguez. An inning later, Dibrell surrendered two consecutive one-out doubles to give New Hampshire its third run of the night. In the ninth, Gordon retired the first two batters he faced before walking Samad Taylor. Taylor advanced to second on defensive indifference, then reached third after a throwing error on a pickoff attempt. Taylor scored on a double by Talley to cut the Binghamton lead to two runs, but Gordon struck out the next batter to end the game.  

A+: Brooklyn Cyclones (8-14) 11, Jersey Shore BlueClaws (9-15) 5 Box Score

Top prospects Mauricio, Baty and Álvarez combined to drive in eight runs for Brooklyn on Tuesday night. Baty, who led the team with three hits, got the Cyclones on the board with a two-out solo home run in the first inning, his first homer of the season. In the second, first baseman Joe Genord gave Brooklyn a 3-0 lead with a two-run home run. Mauricio drove in two runs in the fifth with a two-out triple on a line drive to center field. Baty then plated Mauricio on a line drive single to right field. Baty drove in another run with a double in the eighth, and Álvarez followed Baty with a two-run home run, his first homer with Brooklyn.

Center fielder Adrian Hernandez tacked on an insurance run with a solo home run in the ninth. 

Butto pitched a perfect first before encountering trouble in the second. He gave up a leadoff single in the second inning, then surrendered a two-run home run. The righty retired the next three batters to get out of the inning, then pitched three straight scoreless innings to get through the fifth. Butto entered for the sixth, and the leadoff batter reached base on a fielding error. After Butto struck out the second batter in the sixth, Morris came on in relief. With two outs, Morris balked, scoring the Jersey Shore base runner. Following the balk, with Brooklyn up 6-3, Morris gave up a solo home run to cut the lead to two runs. In the seventh, Morris issued a leadoff walk, then struck out three consecutive batters to end the inning. Winans entered in the eighth and gave up one run over two innings to close out the game. 

A-: Fort Myers Mighty Mussels (12-13) 1, St. Lucie Mets (16-9) 0 Box Score

Suozzi, playing his first game of the season, had the only two hits of the night for St. Lucie. The Mets loaded the bases with no outs in the second, but then failed to score after three straight ground ball outs. The first two Mets batters of the fifth inning walked, but three straight strikeouts stranded the runners on base. 

Right-hander J.T. Ginn and center fielder Alexander Ramirez were added to the St. Lucie Mets roster. Ramirez went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts as the Mets No.2 hitter in his pro debut.

In his first start with St. Lucie, Rojas tossed five scoreless innings. In the second, two runners reached base, but Rojas got out of the inning with a double play. In the third, Rojas issued a two-out walk, then catcher Jose Colina threw out the base runner attempting to steal second. McCall entered with one out in the seventh, and he induced a fly out from the first batter he faced. McCall then loaded the bases, and a run scored on a fielder’s choice.
