The recognition for Rafael Montero keeps coming, as he earns the MiLB PCL Pitcher of the Week award for May 9-15. Earlier today he was named MMN Pitcher of the week. This is the first of such recognition for anyone in the Mets minor leagues this season.
Montero’s performance for the week included holding opponents to just six hits in 11.2 scoreless innings to go with 13 strikeouts, lowering his ERA on the season to 3.94. Wally Backman stated after a recent start. “He attacks the strike zone early and then can expand the strike zone when he gets ahead in the count.”
A one time highly thought of prospect Montero has won the award two previous times in his minor league career, the last coming in August of 2014. With his continued improvements and return to prospect watchers radar, he could become a depth option for the Mets later this year or a trade piece.
I would not trade him. He is 1 day away from getting 2 months worth of starts with an injury to one of our starters. Wheeler is not back until July.
I think he definitely could be a trade chip, Mets have already shown they trust Verrett and Gilmartin more than him so it would take more than one injury.
