MMN‘s own Michael Mayer reports Dominic Hamel and Mike Vasil will be assigned to Double-A Binghamton to start the 2023 season. Shortstop Jett Williams will be assigned to Single-A St. Lucie.

Mayer notes Hamel and Vasil were his two top ranked Mets starting pitching prospects. At MMN, Vasil was rated the Mets ninth best prospect and second best pitching prospect. Hamel was rated the 12th overall prospect and fourth best pitching prospect.

Vasil, 22, was drafted by the Mets in the eighth round of the 2021 draft. He is now consistently throwing in the mid 90s with high spin rates on his fastball and his slider. He is developing a split change for his third pitch, and he was able to effectively use it this spring to strike out Matt Olson.

Hamel, 24, was taken by the Mets in the third round of the 2021 draft. Hamel was named to the Puerto Rican World Baseball Classic team, and he was initially going to take the ball in game three. However, with Puerto Rico facing elimination, Hamel did not pitch in that game and would not pitch during the WBC.

Hamel was named the Mets 2022 Minor League Pitcher of the Year. Hamel has a full arsenal of pitches with a high spin fastball sitting in the low to mid 90s. His second-best pitch is his slider which exceeds 3,000 RPM in spin. Both his fastball and change are strikeout pitches with their vertical breaks, but at the moment, he is still working on a reliable third pitch.

Williams, 19, was the Mets second first round draft pick in the 2022 draft and the 14th pick overall. He was rated by MMN as the fifth best prospect in the Mets farm system.

Last season, Williams played 10 games for the FCL Mets hitting .250/.366/.438 with a double, triple, homer, and six RBI. He was also a perfect 6/6 in stolen base attempts.
