As you can see from the most recent post here on MMN, Vinny B. chose Brooklyn pitcher Robert Gsellman as today’s Mets Minors Pitcher of the Week. It just so happens that the honors haven’t stopped there; the young hurler was also named the NY Penn League Pitcher of the Week.

Not to be outdone, Chris Flexen had another dominant week with Kingsport, earning the most recent Appalachian Pitcher of the Week honors, as well.

Vinny and I both talked a good amount about Gsellman in the previous post, so to see what we had to say about him, make sure you click here.

As for Flexen, this kid just keeps performing at an incredibly high level. The right-hander only started one game last week (August 20th against Burlington), but it was one of his best starts all year, which is hard to say considering what he’s done this season before that start. He threw a two-hit complete game shutout, allowing just one walk while striking out 11 hitters. At the time, he improved to 7-1, and had won seven straight decisions since losing his season debut on June 30th.

To celebrate winning his second APP Pitcher of the Week award this season, Flexen went out last night for his start against Pulaski, winning his eighth straight decision. He did so by allowing one run on five hits, no walks, and six strikeouts in six innings pitched. Since allowing five runs in his debut against Elizabethton, Flexen hasn’t allowed more than three runs in a start, and has either held the opposition scoreless or to one run on five occasions. He’s now 8-1 with a 2.09 ERA, 12 walks, and 62 strikeouts in 69 innings pitched.

Our own Timothy Gilbert wrote about Flexen last week, immediately following his dominant shutout. You can read what he had to say here. Below is one of his comments about the young pitching prospect:

Flexen was signed to a $374,400 rookie contract in 2012. He is widely known for his impressive command, low-90′s fastball and quality breaking pitches. With his recent high-level performances, the 19-year-old Flexen is shaping up to be one of the Mets best prospects at the short season level.

Now, let’s not forget that Darin Gorski was also named the Eastern League Pitcher of the Week yesterday, too. So, three Mets pitching prospects were declared the best performers in their respective leagues in the past week. That’s pretty damn good, if you ask me.
