Game Notes: The Las Vegas 51s roster littered this week’s Who’s Hot list for hitters including Gavin Cecchini who is 14 for 25 during his current hitting streak….Rafael Montero coughed up a 5-0 lead the 51s 17-6 loss on Wednesday night….Ty Kelly comes into tonight with a .421 average which is the second best in all of the minors….Las Vegas is 7-2 over it’s last nine games.
Binghamton (13-11) lost to Portland (9-18) in a 11:00 AM start, 2-1. Dominic Smith was 1 for 4, B-Mets had six hits. Box Score

Starting Pitcher: Corey Oswalt (1-1, 5.89)
Game Notes: Wuilmer Becerra made our Who’s Hot list as well, he is hitting .400 for the season which is 5th in the minor leagues….Despite having the second best average (.262) in the Florida State League the Mets have tied for the second fewest home runs with eight….Reliever Alberto Baldonado made our Who’s Hot list for pitches, he has a 0.71 ERA on the season.
Columbia (14-12) at Greensboro (8-18) has been postponed. They will play a doubleheader tomorrow starting at 5:00 PM ET.
I’m hoping the shoulder is fully healed soon so we can see some pop form Becerra but it’s tough not to get excited by his start anyway.
I don’t think I realized he was hitting THAT well. That’s awesome. That trade really just keeps on giving.
Wuilmer hit in first AB.
Champ Stuart doubles and scores in the first for St.Lucie.
Becerra with a two out single in his first at bat, now hitting .408
What does Oswalt have for stuff?
Is he a legit prospect or going to be minor league filler?
Stuart with RBI groundout for St.Lucie gives them a 2-0 lead.
88-92, hits 93/94, Curve, change. The mets loved to draft him, but he hasn’t improved in stuff.
Sac flies by Nido and Guillorme made it 4-1 then a RBI single by Rosario put St. Lucie up 5-1 in the 5th.
The rewards just keep coming.
Becerra on base again, walks to start the 5th.
Two-run double by Mora gives St. Lucie a 7-2 lead. He has reached base three times tonight, hopefully it will break him out of his funk.
Please don’t even look at the Vegas lineup, stay sane.
LMAO. And many are screaming for Wally to take over the Mets.
Gotta get Muno going
Rosario walks, steals second and scores in the 6th for St. Lucie.
Definitely, getting that 2 for 24 bat in the lineup is super important.
Honestly that is one of the great things about the Mets winning last year. No more Backman for manager bs. He is not a major league manager.
Never was a big wally fan and after the way he treats cecch it’s hard to be his fan.
Cecchini tearing the cover off the ball and gets a day off, already his third of the season. Not mention batting him 7th/8th.
Sandy needs to get on the phone.
Gavin and Nimmo.
Mind you I am not all that high on Nimmo anymore but he is still one of the highest rated prospects in the Mets system along with Gavin, Smith, and Amed….Nimmo and Gavin need to play every day with an occasional day off.
I think Wally has his number blocked.
Exactly, he has been sitting Nimmo against lefties. Which is BS, he should be playing everday.
“We dont have time to develop players, we are trying to win.” -Wally Backman
Now we see where Collins got it from.
Don’t understand why Alderson wouldn’t give Wally an ultimatum. Nimmo, Herrera, and Cecchini play every day except for occasional day off and they bat 1-3. If Wally doesn’t like that, he can find something else to do.
I really just don’t understand how he survived last season, pitched Leathersich 57 pitches and the team fell apart in the last two weeks.
That is a great question and exactly what should happen. No reason for those guys to be batting behind Monell or Krauss ever.
Wally is Jeffy’s boy….so I believe there is that protection there (yes I just called Jeff a condom).
There is a reason that Wally hasnt had an interview for a major league job since the Mets hired Collins…other GMs look at him as a potential manager, not a part of the ’86 team. Remove the emotion and you see that he really isnt a good manager.
Oswalt gives up two in the 6th, Mets lead down to 8-3.
Jeff Wilpon….he is the one who is on Wally’s side.
I’m told i feel that way because I was born in 87, that is why I must dislike Wally.
Vegas doesn’t have a baserunner through two innings.
I have you by 17 years so I remember ’86 well (dont remember what I had for lunch yesterday but that is a different topic).
The ironic thing is that Wally wasnt even a very popular guy on that team. Sure he was a gritty table setter along with Lenny and Mookie but he didnt have the skills of the other two.
It must be some fantastic pitching.
Lugo now has two scoreless innings for Las Vegas.
I still wish we had protected Bowman over him.
I can’t agree on that one, Lugo has a much better breaking ball. I always liked Bowman but I think they made right move in Lugo over him.
Keep it going!!
Wally is playing for a future paycheck, sadly you’re judged on wins and losses and not the garbage you’ve been handed to make it work. We were calling for TC’s head early part of last year, but he had garbage position players until everyone returned and we traded for a few good men.
Minor league managers are not solely judged on wins and losses. it’s different than being a MLB manager. The most important thing is to develop the young players you are given and get them ready to play in the major leagues.
Troubled by lack of playing time for Nimmo and as others have pointed out the 57 pitch performance of Jack Leathersich last year. This kid needs to play everyday unless the towel has been thrown in which i doubt.
Nimmo should absolutely play everyday.
