As Spring Training rolls on and the season opener creeps closer, we here at Mets Minors continue our Mets top 30 prospects for 2022. With that, we’re at #3 where we will cover consensus Top 100 prospect Ronny Mauricio. Baseball America (96), Fangraphs (77), and MLB.com (78) all hail the same praise calling Mauricio a big power bat with a plus glove who’s banging on the door for an MLB debut.

That’s now news to Mets fans. Ever since Mauricio signed on for at then team record $2.1 million bonus, Mets fans have dreamed of Mauricio tapping into his then raw power at the plate.

Last year, after losing a year to the pandemic, Mauricio started off in High-A Brooklyn where the power was on full display. Across 392 at-bats, Mauricio had five triples and 19 home runs while netting 63 RBI. Mauricio’s swing is by no means high-contact, his strikeout rate over his brief career makes that clear, bookmarked by his 26.5% K-rate in 2021 across Brooklyn and Binghamton.

However, when contact is made the results leap off the screen and turn heads. At a young 20, Mauricio’s BABIP was .278 across 420 plate appearances in Brooklyn and a scalding .474 in his 33 brief plate appearances at Double-A Binghamton. Mauricio’s power comes from both sides of the plate, he made that clear while tearing apart the High-A competition last year and even launched one from the left side upon his promotion to Double-A.

The promising 20-year old does play a SS position that’s locked up for the long-term by 28-year old Mets superstar Francisco Lindor, and carries a comparable major league timeline to 3B phenom Brett Baty.  However, Mauricio’s glove work and continuing offensive improvement may provide a magnificent problem for Mets brass that could ask he or Baty to flash the leather at many positions. Mauricio’s smooth operation in the field should easily translate to most infield positions and keep his pathway to major league at-bats navigable.

While Mauricio’s 2021 time in Double-A was brief, it’s not unreasonable to expect his 2022 season to start a bit higher on I-81 in Triple-A Syracuse.  Should it start in Binghamton, don’t expect him to remain there long as Mets brass should be eager to see Mauricio at the minors highest level and just one step away from his long anticipated major league debut.
